Rail passengers travelling to and from Dundee are facing disruption today after ScotRail confirmed issues on the track between Arbroath and Montrose.

The disruption is affecting multiple routes including services between Edinburgh and Aberdeen, Glasgow Queen Street and Aberdeen, as well as Perth and Arbroath services. ScotRail says cancellations, delays and revised timetables are expected until around 17:30 on 7 May while safety inspections take place.

According to ScotRail, trains are currently having to run at reduced speeds between Arbroath and Montrose because of what has been described as a track defect. Staff are currently onsite investigating the issue and carrying out safety checks.

The disruption is having an impact on journeys through Dundee station, with services travelling north towards Aberdeen and south towards Edinburgh and Glasgow affected throughout the day. Some trains are also operating with fewer carriages than normal, while others are running without first class or catering facilities.

Among the affected services is the 16:04 Aberdeen to Edinburgh train, which ScotRail says will operate without catering because of a shortage of onboard staff. Other services between Glasgow Queen Street and Inverness are also operating with reduced facilities and fewer carriages.

ScotRail has advised passengers to check live departure boards and journey planners before travelling as disruption could continue into the evening. Travellers are also being warned that some services may be revised or cancelled at short notice while investigations continue.

The rail operator says updates will continue to be provided throughout the afternoon as engineers work to resolve the issue and return services to normal.
