Dundee has been placed under a yellow weather warning by the Met Office as heavy rain and isolated thunderstorms are expected to sweep across the area from Saturday afternoon into Sunday.
The warning, which covers large parts of eastern and central Scotland, including Dundee, comes into effect from 4pm on Saturday and lasts until midday on Sunday. The Met Office has warned that the conditions may lead to localised flooding, travel disruption and possible power cuts.
According to the forecast, rain arriving from the south is likely to intensify through Saturday evening. Many areas could see rainfall totals of 20–30mm, but in some locations, particularly on southeast-facing hills, this could rise to 50–75mm in just a few hours.
“There is a small chance that homes and businesses could be flooded, causing damage to some buildings,” the Met Office stated. “Delays or cancellations to train and bus services are likely in flooded areas, along with difficult driving conditions more generally.”
The warning also highlights the potential for isolated thunderstorms, which could lead to additional hazards including power outages and sudden downpours that make roads hazardous.
Residents are being advised to stay up to date with the latest forecasts and take precautions where necessary.
The Met Office has issued advice on how to stay safe during the adverse conditions. People are urged to check whether their property is at risk of flooding, prepare an emergency flood kit, and consider adjusting travel plans to avoid disruption.
Motorists are also encouraged to drive with caution, and those who may be affected by power cuts should prepare in advance by keeping torches, mobile phone power packs, and other essentials on hand.
This is one of two warnings issued by the Met Office, highlighting the severity of the approaching weather. Further updates are expected as the situation develops. Locals are encouraged to follow official advice and monitor local travel and weather alerts.
