A colourful 1990s Brazilian TV promo that has resurfaced online that features Dundee’s famous Beano characters appearing alongside some of the world’s biggest animated icons, has gone down a storm on social media.

The clip, branded with the slogan “Aqui no SBT” (meaning “Here on SBT”), was created by Brazil’s SBT network to promote its cartoon line-up.

It was posted on Twitter/X by @kl_to_the_max_1 who tweeted “I can't stop watching this commercial”. The tweet has garnered thousands of likes and 300,000 views on the source tweet alone with others sharing it on other platforms too.

In the short montage, Dennis the Menace, Gnasher and Bananaman can be seen rubbing shoulders with characters from The Simpsons, King of the Hill, The Powerpuff Girls, Popeye, DuckTales, Tom & Jerry and The Flintstones.

Now resurfacing on social media, the promo’s vibrant colours, fast-paced editing and cheerful soundtrack have captured the imagination of fans around the world.

So it was pretty wild to see some of Dundee’s comic icons included in such an international mix, reflecting how far The Beano’s influence travelled during the 1990s and early 2000s.

Created in Dundee by DC Thomson since 1938, The Beano’s beloved characters have long been a cornerstone of British humour.

Animated series based on Dennis the Menace and Gnasher and Bananaman were dubbed into Portuguese and aired across Brazil on SBT, earning a new generation of fans far from Dundee.

The rediscovered promo serves as a quirky reminder of how global television once was – when cartoons from around the world came together on one channel – and how Dundee’s mischievous heroes found themselves right in the middle of it.
