Lochee has been selected as the Dundee location for a new government-backed GP walk-in centre, as part of a wider rollout across Scotland.
The area is one of 16 communities chosen for the new pilot scheme, which aims to make it easier for patients to see a doctor without having to book weeks in advance.
The new service will be based within Lochee Health Centre and will operate seven days a week from 12pm to 8pm. Patients will not need an appointment, with the walk-in model designed to offer quicker access to care for everyday health concerns.
In its first phase, the pilot will be available only to patients registered with Lochee Health Centre.
Officials say this approach will allow them to test how the service works in practice before considering whether to expand it further.
The scheme is part of a wider strategy to ease pressure on family doctors and reduce the daily rush for appointments when surgeries open in the morning.
The so-called ‘8am scramble’ has become a common frustration for patients across the country, with many struggling to get through on the phone or secure a same-day slot.
By offering afternoon and early evening access without appointments, the government hopes the new centres will spread demand more evenly throughout the day and provide an alternative for those who cannot call at 8am. If successful, the pilot could reshape how primary care is delivered in communities like Lochee.
Further details about when the Dundee walk-in centre will officially open are expected to be confirmed in the coming weeks.
