A Dundonian who returned to the city for her wedding after more than a decade away has shared how strangers in the city centre turned her special day into something she will never forget.
Taking to Reddit, the user, originally from Dundee, the bride said she left the city over ten years ago with some “bitterness” towards her hometown.
She travelled back to get married so relatives who were not well enough to travel could attend. But despite the happy occasion, she admitted she had a few “wee wobbles” on the day due to minor drama and was not feeling her best.
It was during that low moment, she said, that Dundee stepped in.
As she and her groom walked back to their hotel after the reception, around 200 strangers began cheering and congratulating the newlyweds. What followed was an outpouring of warmth that left both of them overwhelmed.
She described people running out of pubs to hug and shake their hands, buses stopping to beep their horns and taxis flashing their lights from nearby ranks. Students were said to have been in tears as they congratulated the couple, while bartenders banged on pub windows to wave at them as they passed.
The bride also revealed that her new in-laws were stunned by the welcome. Some had arrived with concerns about visiting the city, but were left amazed at how friendly, welcoming and cultured Dundee felt. The experience, she said, completely changed the atmosphere of the day.
In her message to the city, she thanked Dundonians for showing up for her in a way “only Dundee could” and apologised for not seeing the best in the city all those years ago. What began as a wedding day with a few worries ended as a powerful reminder of the warmth that can still be found on the streets of Dundee.
