Yellow thunderstorm warning issued for Dundee ahead of the weekend

People across Dundee are being urged to take care after the Met Office issued a yellow weather warning for thunderstorms covering the city until tomorrow night.

The warning comes following a spell of warm weather and highlights the risk of heavy, slow-moving thunderstorms developing across parts of eastern Scotland throughout the day and into the evening.

Forecasters say some areas could experience torrential downpours in a short space of time, frequent lightning, hail and gusty winds. While not everyone within the warning area will see thunderstorms, those that do could experience disruption.

The Met Office warns that between 20mm and 50mm of rain could fall within just a few hours in some locations, increasing the risk of localised surface water flooding. Travel disruption is also possible, with spray, standing water and difficult driving conditions potentially affecting roads.

Power cuts and interruptions to some services are also possible where the heaviest storms develop.

Residents are being encouraged to remain weather aware throughout the day, particularly if travelling or taking part in outdoor activities. The Met Office advises people to check the latest forecast, allow extra time for journeys if conditions deteriorate, and avoid floodwater if heavy rain develops.

Although the warning covers a large area, thunderstorms are expected to be scattered, meaning some places may escape with little or no impact while others could see intense downpours over a short period.

The yellow thunderstorm warning remains in place until 11:59pm on Friday 26 June.
