Dennis the Menace marks 75 years with new Royal Mint 50p coin

A new commemorative coin celebrating 75 years of Dennis the Menace has been unveiled by The Royal Mint.

The special 50p piece features the iconic Beano character in his instantly recognisable red and black striped jumper, standing proudly alongside his loyal dog Gnasher. The design captures Dennis’ mischievous grin and rebellious spirit that have defined him for generations of readers.

Dennis first appeared in Beano issue 452 on March 17, 1951, and quickly became one of the comic’s most popular characters. Over the decades, he has grown into a true British icon, known for his pranks, chaos and heart. The Beano itself, first published by DC Thomson on July 30, 1938, remains Britain’s longest-running weekly comic and has entertained families for 87 years.

Rebecca Morgan, director of commemorative coin at The Royal Mint, described Dennis as a character who has brought joy and mayhem to readers for 75 remarkable years. She said there was something fitting about the legendary troublemaker making his mark on a collectible coin, adding that it felt like a prank Dennis himself would appreciate.

Rob Glenny, executive director of growth and new product development at Beano, said Dennis has always had a knack for turning up where you least expect him. He said seeing the character officially minted on a 50p coin was a brilliant way to celebrate decades of laughs and imagination, with Gnasher by his side.
