Residents of Dundee and Tayside were treated to a spectacular display as the Northern Lights made a rare appearance in the skies above the city and the wider area.

The natural phenomenon, also known as Aurora Borealis, painted the night sky with vibrant hues of green, pink, and purple, captivating onlookers and photographers alike.

Many locals took to social media to share their awe-inspiring photos and videos of the celestial show, which is usually more commonly seen in the far north of Scotland.

The northern lights were spotted earlier in the year back in May and were captured by many Dundonians who took to the Dundee Law to see the natural light show in full action.

The Northern Lights occur when charged particles from the sun collide with gases in the Earth's atmosphere, creating a stunning light display.

The conditions were just right for them to be visible from Dundee and Tayside, despite patches of run near the city. But the sky was clear much to the delight of skywatchers in the area.
