A major new street food market is officially on its way to Dundee after plans for the Mill Market Food Hall on Brown Street were approved.
The project will see one of the city’s oldest jute mills transformed into a lively modern destination, bringing fresh energy to a long-neglected corner of the city centre.
The approval, which was confirmed this afternoon by LJRH Architects, marks a significant milestone for the team behind the development, who say the aim is to breathe new life into the historic mill while creating a space that feels vibrant, social, and rooted in Dundee’s heritage. The building’s character will be carefully preserved as part of the regeneration.
Architects working on the project described the decision as “a huge milestone”. They said the redevelopment will revitalise a once-iconic mill, reconnecting it with the community and giving the structure a new purpose for the years ahead.
The food hall will host a mix of street food vendors, independent businesses, and community-led activity, providing a boost to local traders and adding a new focal point to the growing West Marketgait and Brown Street area. It is expected to become a popular stop for residents, students, and visitors.
Teams behind the proposal thanked everyone involved in getting the plans across the line, including their design and conservation specialists, council planners, and project partners. They said the shared effort has helped turn a long-held idea into a reality.
The project is currently at RIBA Stage 4, meaning detailed technical design work will begin before construction gets underway.
Once completed, the Mill Market Food Hall is hoped to become a landmark addition to Dundee’s growing food and cultural scene.
Developers say their goal is to strike a balance between respecting the mill’s historic features and introducing modern, flexible spaces fit for a bustling street food market. They believe the finished venue will celebrate the city’s industrial past while building towards its future.
The announcement has already generated excitement locally, with many welcoming the arrival of a new social hub in the heart of the city. More details about vendors, layout, and opening dates are expected to be confirmed as work progresses.
