After years of uncertainty, the Dundee Tapestry has finally secured a permanent home at the McManus Galleries, and many believe it is exactly where it was always destined to be.
As per The Courier, this remarkable piece of community art, crafted by the hands of over 140 volunteers and admired by nearly 200,000 visitors at V&A Dundee, will now be on long-term display at The McManus in a newly dedicated gallery.
For those involved in the project, there is immense relief and pride that the tapestry - celebrating Dundee’s people, memories, and rich history - will remain free and accessible at the very heart of the city.
Encompassing everything from “Doon the Toon” memories to Dundee’s historic industries, vibrant communities and unique culture, the tapestry has grown beyond its role as a simple artwork.
It has become an integral part of Dundee’s narrative, reflecting the city’s spirit and resilience.
Visitors will soon be able to experience the tapestry inside what organisers affectionately call Dundee’s “people’s museum”.
Plans are already underway for rotating displays, engaging workshops, and future additions to the gallery, ensuring the tapestry continues to evolve and inspire.
The new gallery at The McManus is set to become a hub for storytelling and creativity, further cementing the tapestry’s place in the city’s cultural fabric.
