Dundonians were treated to breathtaking scenes on Wednesday morning as the River Tay appeared almost completely still, transforming the water into a giant mirror reflecting the sky above.
Photos and videos shared across social media captured the unusually calm conditions across the river, with many describing the Tay as looking more like glass or ice than water.
The crystal-clear reflections created striking scenes along Dundee’s waterfront as the morning light stretched across the river.
One social media post described the conditions as “absolutely gorgeous”, adding: “I’ve never seen the Tay this clear and calm. The reflections from the sky felt like the river was frozen in ice.”
The rare stillness quickly caught attention online, with many people sharing images and clips of the peaceful waters from across the city.
Some compared the scenes to a painting, while others said the river almost looked unreal because of how perfectly it reflected the clouds and skyline.
Calm conditions like this can occasionally occur when winds across the estuary drop significantly, allowing the surface of the water to flatten and create mirror-like reflections.
Combined with bright skies, the effect can create some spectacular views across the Tay.
