Plans have been submitted to bring a new drive-thru restaurant to a long-standing fast food site in Dundee.

An application lodged with Dundee City Council outlines proposals to refurbish and rebrand the former KFC building on Tom Johnstone Road. The work, submitted by Glasgow-based firm Mackinnon & Co, is valued at around £75,000.

The site was left vacant earlier this year following the closure of the KFC restaurant, which had operated there for more than 20 years. Its closure marked the end of a familiar presence for many in the area.

Details within the application suggest the focus will be on updating the existing building rather than constructing something entirely new. This includes improvements to the exterior and internal layout as part of a wider rebrand of the unit.

What unit could be moving in?

At this stage, it has not been confirmed which restaurant chain or business could move into the site. The application does not name a future tenant, leaving open the possibility of a new brand entering the Dundee market or an existing operator expanding.

Speculation has been growing that the new site will be a Greggs drive-thru, with one commenter on Dundee Culture stating that they spoke to the site manager who confirmed that it was a Greggs.

Others have speculated that the site could be a Burger King as per previous applications but this is yet to be confirmed.

If approved, the plans would bring activity back to a prominent roadside location and could see the drive-thru reopen in a refreshed form. A decision on the application will be made by Dundee City Council in due course.
