Broughty Ferry is in line for a brand new M&S Food store as the retailer unveils a major expansion across Scotland.

The Ferry features prominently on a newly published list of 32 proposed locations, marking a significant step in the company’s plans to grow its food business nationwide. While no specific site in Broughty Ferry has been confirmed, the inclusion alone has sparked early excitement locally.

The news comes just months after M&S opened its major new Dundee store at Gallagher Retail Park last July, a move that drew strong customer response and signalled renewed investment in the city.

Now, attention turns to Broughty Ferry, with many residents hopeful the area will benefit from the same modern design, wider food ranges and improved accessibility seen in the Gallagher store.

M&S is working towards doubling the size of its food business, and Broughty Ferry’s position on the list reflects the company’s confidence in the community as a strong retail location.

With its busy high street, strong footfall and established customer base, the area has long been seen as a prime destination for premium food shopping.

Local shoppers have often voiced support for more choice in the Ferry, and this announcement aligns with those calls.

Across the UK, the retailer has earmarked around 500 potential sites for new stores. In Scotland alone, 32 towns and cities have been identified for possible new food store openings, including nearby St Andrews and Montrose.

The current phase aims to see 20 stores opened or renewed before the end of the financial year, creating around 800 jobs.

Alex Freudmann, managing director at M&S Food, said the company’s newer stores had performed strongly, giving them the confidence to accelerate their expansion plans.

He said the goal was to bring “the right stores to the right places” and offer customers the best possible shopping experience across the UK.

The proposed Broughty Ferry store forms part of a wider Scottish push, with locations spanning Glasgow, Edinburgh, Aberdeen and the Highlands.

For Dundee and its surrounding communities, the addition of a Ferry store would further strengthen the city’s retail offering and offer more convenience for those who currently travel to the Gallagher Retail Park site.

Although details such as size, design and exact location are yet to be confirmed, anticipation is already building.

If approved, the store would bring new jobs and fresh investment into one of Dundee’s most popular areas, adding to the continued growth of Broughty Ferry’s bustling retail scene.

A full announcement on the confirmed site is expected at a later stage, with residents encouraged to keep an eye out for future updates as plans progress
