Eilish McColgan has set a new women’s European 10km record after a standout performance in Valencia, just a week after the previous record had been broken.
The Scottish athlete won the Valencia Ibercaja 10km on Sunday, crossing the line in 30 minutes and seven seconds.
The 35-year-old shaved three seconds off the time set by Belgium’s Jana van Lent, who had only claimed the record earlier this month.
McColgan’s latest run marks a rapid turnaround at the top of European road racing and re-establishes her as the continent’s fastest woman over the distance.
McColgan had held the European record for more than three years after running 30:19 in Manchester in 2022.
That mark stood until van Lent lowered it to 30:10 in Nice on 4 January, setting up an impressive back-and-forth between Europe’s elite runners.
Before McColgan’s rise, the record had been held for almost two decades by Paula Radcliffe, who ran 30:21 in Puerto Rico in February 2003.
McColgan’s latest performance continues a strong British tradition in women’s distance running.
The Valencia event also saw success in the men’s race, with Sweden’s Andreas Almgren setting a new European men’s record of 26:43.
Almgren beat his own previous best, which was set on the same course, by nine seconds.
