Dundee Stars played their first home game 25 years ago today

Twenty-five years ago today, on 26 August 2001, the Dundee Stars took to the ice at the Dundee Ice Arena for their first-ever home game, welcoming the Ayr Scottish Eagles to Dundee.
It proved to be quite the introduction!
The Stars led 3-1 after the first period before Ayr fought back, with the two sides trading goals in a dramatic final period. With Dundee trailing 5-4 and just seconds remaining, Jan Mikel scored the equaliser at 59:45 to send the arena wild and secure a 5-5 draw.
That memorable night was only the beginning. Under player-coach Tony Hand, the newly formed Stars went on to enjoy an incredible debut season, winning both the British National League title and the Playoff Championship.
A quarter of a century later, the Dundee Stars are still playing at the same arena where their story began. Happy 25th anniversary to one of Dundee’s great sporting institutions!
