Plans to transform Camperdown Park have taken a major step forward, with Dundee City Council preparing to discuss a £1.5 million investment into the city’s largest green space.
The proposals are set to go before the City Governance Committee on 20 April, marking the beginning of what could become a significant upgrade for the park.
The funding comes from the UK Government’s Pride in Place Programme, which is aimed at improving community and public spaces across the country. Dundee has been awarded £750,000 per year over two years, covering 2025/26 and 2026/27, with all funding required to be committed by March 2027.
At the heart of the proposal is Camperdown Park itself, a 400-acre site that plays a major role in the city’s recreational, environmental and cultural life. Council officials are now seeking approval in principle to begin engaging with local communities, ensuring residents help shape how the funding is spent and what the future of the park looks like.
Early ideas suggest a wide-ranging revitalisation of the park’s main visitor areas. This includes a full upgrade of play zones, with new equipment designed to be accessible for all abilities, alongside the introduction of a landmark feature that could become a focal point within the park.
Other improvements being explored include enhanced entrances, clearer signage and better wayfinding, making it easier for both residents and visitors to navigate the park and access its facilities. There are also plans to futureproof infrastructure, with potential upgrades to utilities, connectivity and access routes to support events and ensure long-term sustainability.
Design concepts are still at an early stage, but several Dundee-inspired themes are already being considered.
These include ideas linked to the city’s maritime heritage, its industrial past, and even woodland storytelling influenced by Mary Shelley, offering a creative approach to strengthening Camperdown’s identity.
If approved, the next phase will centre on public consultation, with communities invited to help shape the final plans.
A more detailed design and tender report is expected to return to committee in early 2027, setting the stage for what could be one of the most exciting developments at Camperdown Park in recent years.
