The Scots Language Awards are set to return for 2025 – and for the first time, the ceremony will take place in Dundee.

Nominations are now open until Sunday 3rd August for the annual celebration, which honours individuals and organisations championing the indigenous tongue.

Now in its seventh year, the awards spotlight a wide range of achievements across literature, business, community work, education, and the arts.

Nine of the accolades will be decided by public vote, while a panel will choose winners for the Scots Champion, Janet Paisley Services to Scots, and Young Scots Writer categories.

This year marks a significant shift for the event, as it moves from East Ayrshire to Dundee – described by organisers as a “heartland of the Scots tongue”.

The ceremony will take place at 12.30pm on Saturday 6 September at Discovery Point, the home of the RRS Discovery.

The move also brings a change in format, with the event being held during the day to make it more inclusive and accessible to Scots speakers and supporters across the country.

Alistair Heather from organisers Hands Up For Trad encouraged communities to take part in the nomination process.

"This is yer chance tae gie credit tae aa the guid fowk daein wark in Scots,” he said. “We need YOUR HELP tae mak shair that the richt fowk are nominatit."

Nominations are open from 28 July to 3 August, with public voting on the shortlisted finalists taking place from 18 to 31 August.

The event will be hosted by Dundonian writer and Scots Scriever Taylor Dyson, and will feature performances from notable Scots artists, including singer Ellie Beaton and slam poetry champion Hamish MacDonald.

Afterparty to be hosted at the Keiller Centre

To round off the celebration, an afterparty will be held at Dundee’s Scots language night, Blether, in the Keiller Centre.

Starting at 5pm, the party will include performances by Scots acts and an open mic for attendees to share their own Scots-language talents.

The Scots Language Awards 2025 are delivered by Hands Up For Trad, with support from partners including Creative Scotland, the Scottish Government, the National Library of Scotland, and the Scottish Book Trust.
