A remarkable endurance story is unfolding right now in the Atlantic Ocean, with local connections at its heart. Scotland The Wave are currently battling their way across more than 3,000 nautical miles in the World’s Toughest Row - Atlantic 2025.

Among the crew is Nicky Matthews, from Arbroath and Wormit Boat Club, placing this extraordinary challenge firmly on the radar for the Tay area.

The race is regarded as one of the most demanding physical and mental tests on the planet, with crews rowing day and night in punishing conditions for up to two months.

The all-female Scottish team is tackling the crossing completely unsupported, operating in constant shifts with little sleep while navigating vast ocean swells, isolation and exhaustion.

Their journey is the result of four years of intense preparation, both on and off the water.

Just days into the race, the challenge intensified further when one crew member had to be medically evacuated following an emergency.

Despite the setback, the remaining trio made the decision to continue, pressing on against the odds and refusing to let the moment define the mission.

Beyond the physical achievement, the row is driven by a powerful purpose. The team is raising funds and awareness for several causes close to their hearts, including the RNLI, highlighting the vital work of lifesaving services around the UK coastline.

It is a story of resilience, determination and quiet bravery - and one that deserves to be followed closely.
