To celebrate National Pie Week, here at Dundee Culture, I decided to celebrate as Dundee and the local area can be considered as the land of pehs and birdies - little did I know that posting it opened up a new debate.
It all started when Dundee Culture posted a simple celebration of National Pie Week, honouring that glorious, golden-brown delight we all know and love.
For those unfamiliar with our local lingo, let’s clear this up - yes, Dundonians call it a peh.
Not a pie.
Not a pasty.
Not a “hot meat encasement” (though fair play to the creativity on that one).
A peh.
It’s a term passed down through generations, an essential part of our dialect, and quite frankly to many, it just sounds better.
However, after posting this, some visitors on Dundee Culture started questioning
One questioned “Does anyone actually say Peh in Dundee when ordering a Pie??”, whilst another simply commented “Pies 🤷♂️🤔🙄”
But many were quick to make clear that it was indeed a peh, “Ey fur a peh? Way to go Dundee.” said one, whilst a second said “Who doesnae like peh!”
Another said “It’s a pieeee” where in which I responded by saying “Not when you're in Dundee, it’s not.”
It’s a peh when yer in Dundee
Well, here’s the thing. We know it’s a pie. We’re not denying that. But in Dundee, it’s a peh.
Just like we say baffies instead of slippers, messages instead of groceries, and Ken when we don’t necessarily mean a guy named Kenneth.
So, let’s put this to bed: if you’re in Dundee and order a peh, you’ll get a pie.
Let’s all unite over what really matters - whether it should be a steak peh or a Scotch peh (but that’s a battle for another day).
In the meantime, let’s enjoy the last few days of National Peh Week, sorry - Pie Week - in true Dundee fashion: with a peh in hand and a wee bit of banter to go with it.
