Team Tayside at Glasgow 2026: Day 7

It was a busy day for Dundee and Tayside connections at the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games, with Perth netballer Cerys Cairns completing Scotland's group-stage campaign, Monikie's Joel McFarlane making a strong start to the men's decathlon and Laura Muir returning to the track in the women's 5,000 metres final.

While Scotland's netball team secured their highest-ever Commonwealth Games finish despite narrowly missing out on the semi-finals, McFarlane ended the opening day of the decathlon in the top eight.

🏐 Cerys Cairns and Scotland achieve best-ever Commonwealth Games finish

Perth's Cerys Cairns helped Scotland complete a memorable group-stage campaign despite falling to Uganda in their final Group B match.

The Thistles had already produced one of the performances of the tournament just 24 hours earlier, pushing world powerhouse Jamaica all the way before eventually losing 45-43 after being level at 35-35 heading into the final quarter.

Scotland were unable to repeat that performance against Uganda, with signs of fatigue showing as they lost 65-56. However, finishing fourth in Group B means they have already guaranteed Scotland's highest-ever finish at a Commonwealth Games and will now face Malawi in the seventh-place play-off.

🏃 Joel McFarlane completes day one of decathlon in eighth

Monikie's Joel McFarlane enjoyed a solid opening day in the men's decathlon, sitting eighth overall after the first five events at the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games.

McFarlane opened with 10.85 seconds in the 100 metres before producing a best leap of 6.98 metres in the long jump and throwing 13.05 metres in the shot put. He continued his impressive day in the 400 metres, finishing second in Heat 2 behind fellow Scot Callum Newby in a time of 49.30 seconds, earning 847 points.

With five of the ten events complete, McFarlane has accumulated 3,220 points, leaving him eighth overall heading into Friday's concluding five events. The Monikie athlete returns to action in the 110m hurdles, discus throw, pole vault, javelin throw and 1,500 metres as he looks to climb the standings.

Results so far:

🏃 100 metres: 10.85 seconds (894 points)

🏃 Long jump: 6.98m (809 points)

🥉 Shot put: 13.05m (670 points)

🏃 High jump: (points to be added once confirmed)

🏃 Laura Muir begins LA 2028 journey in Commonwealth Games return

Dundee Hawkhill Harriers athlete Laura Muir returned to the Commonwealth Games stage on Thursday evening, finishing 16th in the women's 5,000 metres final in a time of 15:19.75.

Although it wasn't the result the 2022 Commonwealth 1,500m champion would have hoped for, the race marked an important milestone in her comeback after injury disrupted much of her 2025 season.

Having stepped up to the 5,000m for the first time in international competition, Muir has made no secret of her ambition to build towards the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games, with Glasgow providing another valuable step on that journey.

Scotland still had plenty to celebrate in the event as Megan Keith produced a superb performance to claim the bronze medal after a thrilling battle with the Australian athletes. Australia's Rose Davies took gold just days after winning the 10,000 metres, becoming the first woman in Commonwealth Games history to win both the 5,000m and 10,000m titles at the same Games.

Keith's medal also capped an impressive turnaround after the Inverness athlete endured a difficult Olympic debut in Paris in 2024, where she finished last in the 10,000 metres.

On that occasion, it was Dundee's Eilish McColgan who showed arguably the greatest showmanship at the games, famously waiting at the finish line to congratulate and comfort her teammate - a moment that made Thursday's bronze medal all the more special.
