Work has officially begun on a major transformation project that will reshape the future of the Dundee Museum of Transport.

The first steps are now underway at the historic Maryfield Tram Depot, marking a significant milestone in plans to create a new, expanded home for the museum.

Construction firm CHAP Group has moved on site to begin restoration, conservation and fit-out works on the Category B Listed building. The depot has been on the Buildings at Risk Register since 2002, and today’s groundbreaking event brought together key partners, supporters and members of the wider project team to mark the start of this long-awaited redevelopment.

The Maryfield Tram Depot has a rich history, having originally been built in 1901 and once housing up to 70 trams at its peak. The redevelopment will see the building brought back to life as a modern, community-focused attraction while preserving its historic character.

Once complete, the new museum will be nearly three times the size of the current site at Market Mews. Plans include a mix of permanent and temporary exhibitions, alongside a café, shop and new indoor and outdoor public spaces designed to welcome visitors of all ages.

The project has been years in the making and has secured backing from major funders, local partners and the community itself. A crowdfunding campaign raised more than £34,000, underlining the level of local support and interest in preserving Dundee’s transport heritage.

Construction is expected to take around 12 months, with the new museum on track to open in the first half of 2027. Once complete, the transformed tram depot is set to become one of Dundee’s key cultural destinations, celebrating the city’s past while creating a space for future generations.
