New V&A Dundee exhibition to celebrate 80 years of NCR and ‘The Cash’

A new exhibition celebrating 80 years of NCR in Dundee and the generations of city workers who helped transform the way people access and manage money around the world is coming to V&A Dundee.

Working at ‘The Cash’: 80 Years of NCR in Dundee will open at the waterfront museum on Saturday, November 21.

The exhibition will explore the remarkable history of National Cash Register in Dundee, from the American company’s arrival in the city in 1946 through to the work of NCR Atleos today.

Known affectionately to generations of Dundonians simply as ‘The Cash’, NCR became one of Dundee’s most significant employers and helped establish the city as a centre for innovation in financial technology.

The exhibition will highlight the role Dundee’s skilled workforce played in that story and how technology developed and manufactured in the city went on to have an impact far beyond Scotland.

From cash registers to cash machines

When NCR established its Dundee operation in 1946, the company was best known for manufacturing cash registers.

Over the decades, its work in the city evolved considerably, including the development and production of cash dispensers and technology which helped change how millions of people interacted with their money.

But the new V&A Dundee exhibition will also focus on the people behind that technology.

For generations of families across Dundee, ‘The Cash’ was more than the name of a major employer. It became part of the city’s social and industrial fabric, with generations of Dundonians working for the company during its eight decades in the city.

The exhibition will celebrate those workers and explore the lasting impact NCR has had on Dundee’s communities alongside its influence on the global financial industry.

An 80-year Dundee story

NCR’s presence in Dundee has survived enormous changes in both technology and the city’s economy since the first operation opened in 1946.

Today, that story continues through NCR Atleos, which maintains a presence in Dundee and develops technology for the financial services industry.

The company is continuing to build on the expertise established in the city over the past eight decades as it works on technologies shaping the future of how people access financial services.

Working at ‘The Cash’: 80 Years of NCR in Dundee will offer the chance to look back at that history while recognising Dundee’s contribution to an industry used by people across the world every day.

The exhibition opens at V&A Dundee on Saturday, November 21.
