New Dundee tram exhibition to open as museum prepares for historic final chapter at Market Mews

A brand new exhibition celebrating Dundee’s tram history is set to open at the Dundee Museum of Transport next month as the museum prepares for its final months at Market Mews.

The exhibition, titled “Oor Trams: Dundee’s Tram Era Remembered”, will officially open on June 8 and will run until October 31, marking 70 years since trams disappeared from the streets of Dundee.

The special exhibition will explore Dundee’s historic tram network and the important role it once played in everyday life across the city.

Visitors can expect nostalgic photographs, historic artefacts, stories from Dundee’s transport past and several surprises throughout the exhibition.

The exhibition also carries extra significance for the museum itself. October 30 will mark the final day of operations at the museum’s current Market Mews site before it closes ahead of its future move to the former Maryfield Tram Depot on Forfar Road.

The move will see the museum relocate into the historic tram depot building itself - creating a major new permanent home for Dundee’s transport heritage within one of the city’s most iconic surviving transport landmarks.

The timing of the tram exhibition has therefore been described as especially fitting, with the museum preparing to leave its current site while simultaneously celebrating the city’s tram era and the future transformation of the former depot building.

Museum visitors attending the exhibition this summer will also have the chance to experience one of the final major exhibitions to take place at Market Mews before the museum begins its next chapter at Maryfield.
