Dundee’s plans for the festive season are beginning to take shape, with new details emerging about how the city will celebrate Christmas and St Andrew’s Day this year.
It’s already been confirmed that the traditional Christmas tree could return to City Square, alongside a festive lights switch-on event - marking a return to some much-loved traditions that many Dundonians have been keen to see back.
Now, additional proposals going before Dundee City Council’s Fair Work, Economic Growth and Infrastructure Committee outline how the celebrations could be expanded further - including the return of the Dundee Hooley to mark St Andrew’s Day, and a series of family-friendly activities throughout the festive period.
A combined £205,000 in council funding has been set aside to support the main events, made up of £145,000 from the City Development revenue budget and £60,000 from wider investment agreed earlier this year to support events that encourage economic growth and increase footfall in the city centre.
The council is also seeking to bring in external providers to deliver more festive experiences in City Square - with a proposed tender process inviting operators to offer children’s activities, rides, interactive entertainment and seasonal market stalls. These additional offerings wouldn’t be council-funded, but the aim is to create an affordable and engaging festive atmosphere in the heart of the city.
While the full schedule is still to be confirmed, this latest update points to a growing commitment to make Dundee’s city centre feel festive, welcoming and vibrant - supporting local businesses and giving the community more reasons to celebrate together.
