Dundee will welcome one of the UK’s leading astrophysicists this month as Professor Catherine Heymans, Scotland’s Astronomer Royal, visits the city for a special talk marking 90 years of Mills Observatory.

The event, taking place at the Steps Theatre, forms part of a wider programme celebrating the long history of Mills Observatory, which first opened its doors in 1935 as the only full-time public observatory in the UK.

Professor Heymans, an acclaimed cosmologist known for her work on dark matter and the evolution of the Universe, will lead audiences on a fascinating journey through space, exploring how modern astronomy is helping to answer some of humanity’s biggest questions.

The talk is the first event announced for Mills Observatory's 90th celebrations.

Her talk will reflect her passion for sharing the wonders of the night sky with the public, continuing the tradition of outreach that Mills Observatory has upheld for nearly a century.

The 90th anniversary celebrations mark an important milestone for the observatory, which has inspired generations of Dundonians to look up at the stars. Over the decades, it has played a key role in education and community engagement, hosting public viewings, talks, and family-friendly events.

The event is free to attend, though donations are encouraged, with proceeds going towards the continued support and development of Mills Observatory’s public programmes.

An Evening with Scotland’s Astronomer Royal takes place this October at the Steps Theatre, Dundee, as part of the Mills Observatory 90th birthday celebrations.
