Dundee Rep and Scottish Dance Theatre have announced the appointment of renowned arts leader Kath Mainland CBE as their new Executive Director, marking the beginning of a bold new chapter for the city’s leading cultural institution.

Mainland, originally from Orkney, returns to Scotland with over two decades of leadership experience across some of the UK and Australia’s most prestigious arts organisations. She succeeds Liam Sinclair, who is stepping down to take on the role of Executive Director and Co-Chief Executive at the National Theatre of Scotland.

Mainland’s most recent role was Chief Executive of the Adelaide Festival, Australia’s premier international arts event, which celebrated record-breaking audience numbers in 2024 under her leadership. She previously served in senior roles at RISING Melbourne and the Melbourne International Arts Festival, and earlier in her career, led the Edinburgh Festival Fringe Society and the Edinburgh International Book Festival. She was awarded a CBE in 2014 for her services to culture in Scotland.

Speaking about her appointment, Mainland said: “I’m so delighted to be returning to Scotland to take the helm at Dundee Rep and Scottish Dance Theatre, one of the most dynamic cultural institutions in the UK, at this exciting time. The combination of world-class theatre, an internationally acclaimed dance company and a community engagement programme that goes right to the heart of the community is a dream come true for me.”

Her arrival comes as Dundee Rep prepares to open its highly anticipated, sold-out production Make It Happen, starring screen legend Brian Cox in his first Scottish stage role in a decade.

Directed by Rep Artistic Director Andrew Panton, the production will debut in Dundee before transferring to the 2025 Edinburgh International Festival.

Panton, who also serves as CEO, welcomed Mainland’s appointment, saying:

“Coming from a multi-arts and festivals background, Kath’s extensive experience could not be a better fit for our unique organisation. I look forward to collaborating with her as we jointly lead Dundee Rep and Scottish Dance Theatre into an exciting new chapter.”

Chair of the Board, Dr Susan Hetrick, added:

“Kath brings an exceptional wealth of experience, strategic clarity, and a deep belief in the power of the arts to connect, challenge and inspire. Her appointment marks a significant new chapter—one that will strengthen our artistic storytelling, deepen our engagement with communities, and build a vibrant, inclusive, and sustainable future.”

With a reputation for transformational leadership and deep-rooted passion for the arts, Mainland is poised to help shape the future of Dundee Rep and Scottish Dance Theatre, ensuring the venue remains a national and international beacon for creativity, innovation, and community impact.
