A new community forest inspired by Dundee’s maritime past is set to take root in early 2026, as HMS Unicorn teams up with Dundee City Council to create the HMS Unicorn Forest at Camperdown Park.

The project will see 1,000 oak trees planted across the park, reflecting the estimated number of trees that would once have been needed to build a wooden ship like HMS Unicorn.

It is designed as a long-term, living legacy that links Dundee’s shipbuilding history with modern ideas around conservation and sustainability.

Working closely with the council’s forestry team, the initiative will bring together schools, volunteers and community groups from across the city.

As well as the planting itself, the forest will become a space for learning, reflection and connection with nature.

A key focus of the project is education, with meaningful learning opportunities planned for children and young people.

This includes a schools competition to design the forest’s logo, helping pupils explore how Dundee’s maritime heritage connects with the natural environment.

The HMS Unicorn Forest will also support biodiversity and wellbeing, creating new habitats while offering a calm, green space for people to enjoy.

Organisers say the project highlights how forestry and sustainability play a role in the long-term care of historic wooden ships.

The forest is linked to Project Safe Haven, which supports the future conservation of HMS Unicorn and helps ensure the ship can be protected for generations to come.

By planting trees now, the project looks both to the past and the future.

Community planting days will be announced soon, with booking details and dates to follow. Dundee City primary teachers who are interested in getting involved with their classes are encouraged to get in touch with the HMS Unicorn team.
