Dundonian Mark Stewart crowned world champion at UCI Track Cycling World Championships in Shanghai

Dundonian cyclist Mark Stewart has been crowned world champion in the Men's Points Race at the UCI Track Cycling World Championships in Shanghai, securing a remarkable achievement on the international stage.
The victory marks a huge moment for the Dundee-born cyclist, who has represented Great Britain and Scotland throughout his career and established himself as one of the country's leading track endurance riders.
And for Dundee, it's another fantastic sporting achievement to celebrate, with one of the city's own reaching the very top of his sport!
Stunning victory for Dundee cyclist in Shanghai
Stewart claimed the gold medal on Friday 16 October after an impressive performance in the 40km race, which saw riders complete 160 laps of the Shanghai Velodrome.
The Men’s Points Race is one of track cycling’s most tactical events, with competitors earning points through intermediate sprints and by gaining laps on the main field.
Stewart produced a brilliant ride to finish at the top of the standings, overcoming strong competition from France’s Benjamin Thomas and Portugal’s Carlos Salgueiro.
The Dundonian finished second in the final sprint, but his performance across the entire race was enough to secure the world title.
It is Stewart’s first individual world championship gold medal, adding another major achievement to an already impressive cycling career.
From Commonwealth Games glory to world champion
Stewart is no stranger to success on the international stage.
In 2018, he won gold for Scotland in the Men’s Points Race at the Commonwealth Games on Australia’s Gold Coast, delivering one of the standout performances of the competition.
That same year, he also secured bronze at the UCI Track Cycling World Championships in Apeldoorn, Netherlands.
Now, eight years later, the Dundonian has gone two places better to claim the biggest individual title of his career.
His latest achievement comes at the age of 31 and demonstrates his remarkable longevity and determination in a demanding sport.
Another incredible achievement for Dundee
Stewart’s victory is another proud moment for Dundee, which has produced sporting talent across a wide range of disciplines.
Winning a world championship is an extraordinary achievement, requiring years of dedication, training and competition against the very best athletes in the world.
And for Stewart, the gold medal represents the culmination of that hard work, adding the prestigious world champion’s rainbow jersey to his collection of honours.
A huge congratulations to Mark Stewart on becoming world champion and giving Dundee another fantastic sporting achievement to celebrate!
