Dundee To Host International Garden Photographer Of The Year For Second Consecutive Year At Verdant Works

Dundee Heritage Trust has announced that it will host the latest International Garden Photographer of the Year (IGPOTY) Exhibition, at Verdant Works Museum.

IGPOTY Exhibition 17 will be on display in the atmospheric High Mill at Verdant Works Museum from 5th April – 28th August 2024, following the success of hosting IGPOTY Exhibition 16 in 2023; the first time the prestigious exhibition had been shown in Dundee.

IGPOTY Exhibition 16 was seen and enjoyed by over 8,000 visitors to Verdant Works Museum in 2023, and the Dundee Heritage Trust team look forward to welcoming even more for this year’s exhibition.

As well as featuring a curated selection of images from IGPOTY Competition 17, this year’s IGPOTY Exhibition in Verdant Works Museum features awarded images showcasing Dundee’s rich greenery and incredible heritage.

Featuring a range of popular views in the city – from Magdalen Green to the Tay Rail Bridge, to Morgan Academy – captured by photographers from across Dundee.

Created by Dundee Heritage Trust in partnership with IGPOTY, the Special Award competition ‘Dundee’s Heritage and Nature’ encouraged photographers to share their favourite green spaces and heritage scenes in the city of Discovery, to be judged by a panel of Dundee Heritage Trust and IGPOTY representatives; the latter whom have viewed and curated thousands of top-class images from all over the globe.

IGPOTY Exhibition 17 promises bursts of colour paired with subdued scenes. From macro details of plant life, to sunshine glimmering over mangroves under the sea, to soft summer evenings captured over British landscapes, this spectacular exhibition has something for everyone.

This curated selection of awarded images from IGPOTY Competition 17 was launched in February at Kew Gardens, and as well as being displayed here in Dundee at Verdant Works Museum, will also be shown at Cambridge University Botanic Garden and Blenheim Palace.

The showcase in Verdant Works Museum’s High Mill is currently the only place in Scotland to take in this breathtaking photography exhibition this Summer.

James McGlinchey, Exhibitions Manager at IGPOTY says;

“The upcoming IGPOTY exhibition at Verdant Works is significant because it allows the people of Dundee to see stunning scenes of nature from across the world, whilst also showcasing a creative selection captured closer to home – via the 'Dundee's Heritage and Nature' Special Award.”

Sophie Hinde, Heritage Manager at Dundee Heritage Trust says;

“We are so excited to be bringing IGPOTY back to Verdant Works after the success of last year. It is a beautiful exhibition filled with a wide range of photographic subjects offering something for everyone. The inclusion of ‘Dundee’s Heritage and Nature’ Special Award has made this year even more special. Look out for linked talks and workshops in the upcoming months.”

John White, 1st place winner of ‘Dundee’s Heritage and Nature’ Special Award competition says;

“I accidentally found details of the Dundee Heritage Photographic competition online and as I have been taking photographs in and around Dundee for many years thought it worth entering and was surprised and delighted to win and look forward to see my photograph on display at Verdant Works.”

The exhibition will be in the historic High Mill of Verdant Works; the oldest space in the refurbished 19th century jute mill found in the heart of Dundee’s industrial area. The High Mill is most often associated with its peaceful atmosphere and unique architecture.
