Dundee’s mural trails have been recognised as some of the coolest in Scotland

Dundee’s growing reputation as a city of public art has been given a boost after its mural trails were recognised as some of the coolest in Scotland by Herald Scotland.

The feature highlights Open Close Dundee, a series of self-guided street art trails that encourage people to explore parts of the city they might otherwise walk past.

The trails take visitors through closes, streets and neighbourhoods filled with colour, stories and creativity.

Across Dundee, there are now more than 700 pieces of permanent public art, including sculptures, mosaics and murals.

Together, they form an ever-changing outdoor gallery that can be explored at your own pace on an urban wander.

One of the routes focuses on Lochee, where visitors can find several striking large-scale works. Among them is Efter a Hard Day’s Graft by Laura Darling, a mural that has become a well-known landmark in the area.

Another trail runs through Stobswell and features the eye-catching Close Encounters by Fraser Gray and Martin McGuinness.

The mural is one of the largest in the city and often stops passers-by in their tracks.

There is also a third route taking in Dundee city centre, blending street art with shops, cafes and everyday city life.

The Herald Scotland feature also points to cosy cafes along the way, with Mana Coffee and Empire State Coffee Artisan Roasters noted as ideal spots for a warming break after a stroll.
