Dundee Rep and Scottish Dance Theatre have announced the winner of their new Local Arts Hero Award, celebrating someone who has made a lasting impact on the arts.

The award, launched late last year, invited audiences to nominate a person who gives their time, passion and energy to creative work in the community.

This year’s honour has gone to Sheridan Nicol, CEO of JazzArt UK, who has worked in the performing arts industry for more than 50 years. She oversees the creative and technical development of the company and continues to play an active role in shaping productions. Alongside her leadership work, she directs and stages television specials across Europe and remains in demand as a voice over artist.

Sheridan was nominated by her colleague and lifelong friend Joanne Tulips, who recognised her decades of dedication to supporting performers and developing creative projects. The award aims to highlight individuals whose influence is felt both on stage and behind the scenes.

In a heartwarming twist, it was revealed that Sheridan once taught Dundee Rep’s Artistic Director Andrew Panton when he was 17 years old. Andrew was not involved in the judging process, making the connection an unexpected surprise on the day. Her guidance at a key stage in his life clearly left a lasting impression.

Sheridan visited Dundee Rep alongside Joanne to receive the award in person. The theatre said the recognition reflects not only her long career, but also the inspiration and encouragement she has given to others throughout the years.

The Local Arts Hero Award is designed to shine a spotlight on those who quietly help shape the creative life of the city and beyond. For Sheridan Nicol, it marks a special moment of appreciation after a lifetime dedicated to the arts.
