Dundee named Scotland’s most affordable city for a day out in new UK study

Dundee has officially been named Scotland’s most affordable city for a day out, with new research revealing that the City of Discovery is also the second most affordable in the entire UK!
A new study by travel insurance specialist InsureandGo found that visitors can enjoy a full day exploring Dundee for just £74.34, comfortably below the popular £100-a-day holiday budget.
The research examined the cost of visiting 124 European cities, including 24 across the UK, taking into account meals, drinks, public transport and entry to a popular attraction.
And Dundee has come out ahead of every other Scottish city included in the study, including Glasgow, Aberdeen and Edinburgh.
Dundee takes second place across the UK
Of the 24 UK cities analysed, only Coventry was found to be more affordable than Dundee, with an estimated daily cost of £67.64.
Dundee secured second place at £74.34, followed by Nottingham at £75.82 and Glasgow at £77.72.
The research also revealed that Dundee offers the cheapest cappuccino of any UK city included in the study, averaging just £3.30.
Other estimated costs include £16.05 for lunch, £30.10 for a three-course dinner and £4.32 for a local beer.
Entry to Discovery Point, identified as Dundee’s top paid attraction on Tripadvisor for the study, was priced at £12.60.
How does Dundee compare with other Scottish cities?
The figures make particularly interesting reading when comparing Dundee with Scotland’s other major cities.
A typical day out in Glasgow was estimated at £77.72, making it £3.38 more expensive than Dundee.
Aberdeen came in at £83.32, almost £9 more, while Edinburgh was considerably more expensive at £104.45.
That means visitors could spend £30.11 less enjoying a day out in Dundee than in Scotland’s capital, based on the activities and purchases included in the study.
And Dundee’s affordability doesn’t just stand out within Scotland.
The city was also found to be cheaper than several popular European destinations, including Paris (£76.16), Budapest (£77.76) and Dublin (£81.02).
Great value in the City of Discovery
For a city packed with museums, galleries, historic attractions and a growing food and drink scene, the findings offer another positive reason to consider Dundee for a day trip.
From exploring the city’s waterfront and discovering its maritime history at Discovery Point to visiting its many cultural attractions, Dundee has plenty to offer visitors.
And with several attractions, including The McManus and V&A Dundee’s permanent displays, offering free admission, there are opportunities to enjoy the city for even less than the study’s estimated daily budget.
Of course, actual spending will depend on where visitors eat, what they choose to do and how they travel.
But the latest figures highlight something worth celebrating: Dundee is one of the most affordable cities in Britain for a day out.
The research was carried out by travel insurance specialist InsureandGo, comparing typical visitor costs across 124 European cities, including 24 in the UK.
