Dundee has taken centre stage on national television after the city was featured in a full episode of the BBC quiz show Do You Know This Place?.
Hosted by Vernon Kay, the programme sees celebrity guests test their knowledge of a different UK location each day. This week’s run of shows begins in Dundee, with the city’s landmarks, history and local culture forming the basis of the questions contestants must answer.
The show’s unique twist comes from Traitors star Paul Gorton, who acts as the programme’s “unreliable tour guide”. Throughout the episode he mixes genuine facts with elaborate tall tales, leaving the celebrity players to decide which stories are true and which are completely made up.
Comedian and presenter Susan Calman, internet personality Max Fosh and BBC Asian Network DJ Noreen Khan are this week’s contestants. Each episode crowns a daily winner, while scores are carried forward across the week to determine the overall champion on Friday.
The Dundee episode included questions about some of the city’s best-known landmarks. Contestants were asked what inspired the design of the V&A Dundee, as well as the unusual connection between the historic warship HMS Unicorn and Scotland’s national animal as well as separating fact from fiction on whether it was possible to kick a football from either Dens or Tannadice.
A number of recognisable locations from across the city also appeared during the programme, including RRS Discovery, V&A Dundee, DC Thomson headquarters, HMS Unicorn, Abertay University, the University of Dundee and Clark’s Bakery.
The show also highlighted Dundee’s distinctive local dialect. In one round, contestants had to identify the meanings of Dundonian words, with familiar terms such as “cludgie” and “teckle” making an appearance.
The iconic Beano also made an appearance, with a question on some of the iconic Celebrity Guest Editors of the Dundee-based comic magazine.
With Dundee’s landmarks, history and language all playing a role in the quiz, the episode offered viewers across the UK a light-hearted introduction to the City of Discovery.
