Dundee has appeared in a new viral AI-generated trailer reimagining Grand Theft Auto VI through a Scottish lens.

The video, created and shared on Instagram by A-Aye TV, has quickly gained attention for blending iconic game imagery with recognisably Scottish humour and locations.

In the trailer, main character Lucia Caminos is shown sitting at the Dundee waterfront at night, next to the V&A Dundee.

The brief scene places Dundee alongside major Scottish cities and landscapes, presenting the country as a reimagined open world inspired by the hugely anticipated next instalment of the series.

The video has now been watched more than 409,000 times, with around 28,700 likes and over 47,000 shares helping it spread rapidly across social media.

Alongside Dundee, the trailer features scenes set in Glasgow, Edinburgh, Aberdeen and the Scottish Highlands including a shot showing a helicopter making its way towards Eilean Donan Castle.

Dundee’s inclusion carries extra significance. The original Grand Theft Auto was created in the city by DMA Design, the studio that would later become Rockstar North, making Dundee the birthplace of the globally successful franchise. That history has been widely shared again as the trailer continues to circulate online.

Much of the trailer’s appeal lies in its sharp Scottish humour. Moments include a Tenants lager heist, Lucia drinking Irn-Bru on a ScotRail train, and references to viral Scottish phrases that viewers immediately recognised.

The video also features familiar cultural faces, including fictional characters from Still Game, with Navid appearing in a dramatic scene, as well as political nods such as former first minister Nicola Sturgeon speaking in the Scottish Parliament.

A recreated Grand Theft Auto VI logo rounds things off, complete with a playful “Scotland Edition” tagline.

After I shared the trailer on Dundee Culture, the creator of A-Aye TV jokingly apologised to me for Dundee only featuring in a single scene, despite the city being where Grand Theft Auto was originally invented.

The light-hearted exchange has only added to the fun surrounding the video, which continues to be widely shared.
