Dundee has been named the most festive student city in the UK

Dundee has been recognised as the most festive city in the UK for university students, after both Abertay University and the University of Dundee claimed the top two spots in a new ranking by Unifresher.

The list, which analysed a range of Christmas-themed factors, paints Dundee as a city brimming with winter cheer.

Abertay University took first place with an overall score of 209, performing strongly across every category assessed.

The university ranked joint first in the UK for pubs per square mile, sixth for the length of its Christmas break, and was listed among the closest universities geographically to the North Pole - a fun metric that added extra festive flavour to the list.

According to Unifresher, the consistency of Abertay’s high scores secured its position as the most festive university in the country.

Right behind it, the University of Dundee secured second place with 205 points, confirming that the city as a whole delivers a standout festive experience for students.

The result also highlights Scotland’s strong performance across the rankings, with Edinburgh, Edinburgh Napier, Aberdeen and Stirling all landing in the top 10.

Other universities featured in the festive top tier include the University of Sunderland in third place, Newcastle University and Northumbria University in joint sixth, and the University of Bradford completing the top five.

While Scotland dominated overall, cities like Newcastle and Manchester also received praise for their vibrant Christmas markets, sparkling light displays and bustling atmosphere throughout December.

Unifresher noted that Scotland’s cosy charm, wintry traditions and student-friendly festive settings continue to set it apart on the national stage.

Dundee’s success, in particular, reflects its growing appeal to students who enjoy a lively city centre, strong community feel and plenty of seasonal activities.

Both universities benefit from Dundee’s compact layout, thriving nightlife and easy access to festive events across the city.
