Dundee has been named one of the best places in the UK for writing inspiration by the Southbank Centre, placing the city alongside several well-known coastal and cultural destinations.

The feature highlighted Dundee’s Riverside Nature Park as a key source of inspiration, pointing to its open space, wildlife and views along the Tay as ideal surroundings for creative thinking.

The recognition adds to Dundee’s long-standing links with literature and storytelling. The city has a history of inspiring writers, artists and thinkers through its landscape, changing light and dramatic contrasts between urban life and nature.

During the early 19th century, author Mary Shelley spent time in Dundee, with scholars noting that her experiences in the city and its surroundings influenced themes and ideas later explored in Frankenstein.

Dundee was named alongside Weston-super-Mare, Southend and Penzance, all places recognised for offering environments that help spark imagination and reflection.

The mention underlines how Dundee’s green spaces and riverside setting continue to play an important role in the city’s cultural identity, offering residents and visitors alike places to pause, reflect and create.
