Dundee Gaelic Choir celebrates 60 years with special Wellgate exhibition
Dundee Gaelic Choir is celebrating a very special milestone this October, marking 60 years since the choir was re-constituted with a new exhibition in the heart of the city.
Còisir Gàidhlig Dhùn Dè will take over part of the Central Library throughout October, bringing together photographs, artefacts, music and memories from across the choir’s history.
And to officially open the exhibition, the choir itself will be performing.
Celebrating 60 years of Dundee Gaelic Choir
The anniversary exhibition opens on Saturday 3 October, when members of Dundee Gaelic Choir will perform at the Central Library from 11am for around 30 minutes.
Visitors will then be able to explore the exhibition throughout the month before it closes on 31 October.
At the heart of the display will be a collection of photographs documenting the choir through the decades, alongside a selection of artefacts charting its story and its place within Dundee’s Gaelic community.
The exhibition marks 60 years since the choir was re-constituted, providing an opportunity to look back at the people, performances and moments which have shaped it over the decades.
From Dundee to Orléans
The exhibition will also celebrate the choir’s more recent adventures.
Visitors will be able to watch a short video documenting its recent trip to Orléans in France, one of Dundee’s twin cities.
The choir travelled to Orléans as part of the continuing cultural links between the two cities, taking Dundee’s Gaelic music and culture across the Channel.
Hear a song written especially for Dundee
There will also be an opportunity to hear something with a particularly strong connection to the city – Baile Dhùn Dè, or The Town of Dundee.
The song was written and composed especially for Dundee Gaelic Choir and will form part of the anniversary exhibition.
For six decades, Còisir Gàidhlig Dhùn Dè has helped keep Gaelic song and music alive in Dundee – and this October’s exhibition offers the chance to celebrate that history while discovering more about the choir today.
The Dundee Gaelic Choir 60th anniversary exhibition opens at Central Library on Saturday 3 October and runs until Saturday 31 October.
