Dundee cafe Cake or Dice has been named the best board game cafe in Scotland

A Dundee cafe that offers a variety of food, drinks and hundreds of board games has been named the best board game cafe in Scotland.

Cake or Dice has been recognised for its work bringing the community of Dundee together with board games, food, drinks and various activities.

This independent cafe has quickly become a hub of the community and has been officially awarded Board Game Café of the Year at the Scotland Prestige Awards 2026/27.

It’s no surprise this award winning cafe has rapidly grown in popularity as they report over 50,000 customers in the first three years of business.

Cake or Dice offers a wide range of board games, from short and simple games to longer games, strategy games and adventures.

You don’t have to be an experienced player to visit this game cafe. Their staff are enthusiastic and willing to help beginners.

Customers can also get sweet treats, delicious meals, and speciality coffees, whether they want to play board games or not.

Cake or Dice has something for everyone in Dundee.

The cafe hosts events like tabletop gaming and D&D sessions as well as workshops and gatherings, and provides opportunities for people to socialize and take part in new activities.

A welcoming space for the Dundee community

What makes Cake or Dice special is bringing the community together.

As a community interest company, the café makes an inclusive and alcohol free space to socialize and meet new people.

After only a few months of operation, it became the most visited place in Dundee with over 50,000 visitors and counting.

The café’s online community has also grown, boasting a Discord server with 100s of members.

And for Sable Stevenson, this award was much more than recognition.

She said, “I’m genuinely delighted that we’ve won this. When we started Cake or Dice, we wanted to create somewhere people could be themselves, have fun and feel like they belonged.”

“It’s not necessary to be a serious gamer to come here and it’s not even necessary to play a game. We just want people to have fun and feel comfortable.”

Sable has referred to their success many times, adding:

“It is incredible to win an award for the whole of Scotland, and it is an honor to have created something that people look forward to going to, and feel that they belong there.”

The Scotland Prestige Award is yet another marvelous addition to Cake or Dice’s numerous accomplishments.

Cake or Dice was named Dundee’s Best Café at the Scotland’s Business Awards, and has received an Innovation Award from the Dundee Social Enterprise Network.

It has also been named a finalist at the Proud Scotland Awards and once more nominated Dundee’s Best Café for 2026.
