Broughty Castle could soon be hosting markets, guided tours and historical reenactments as fresh plans for the venue have been revealed

Updated: Apr 1

Broughty Ferry Castle is set to enter an exciting new chapter, with plans underway to revitalise this historic landmark following fears of the castle’s future.

Following the recent budget announcement, Dundee City Council, Historic Environment Scotland, Leisure & Culture Dundee, and The Broughty Ferry Traders are working together to breathe new life into the castle and its visitor experience.

What’s changing?

A range of improvements are in the works, aiming to enhance accessibility, engagement, and community involvement.

While not everything will happen immediately, here’s a glimpse of what visitors can look forward to:

✅ Card payments and donations will be accepted

🛍️ A refreshed shop with a wider selection, including local products

⚔️ Historical reenactments bringing the past to life

🐬 Seabird and dolphin-watching events from the castle’s stunning vantage point

🛒 Markets and Gala Week events at the castle grounds

🗺️ Guided tours offering deeper insight into the castle’s rich history

These are just the first steps in a long-term vision to restore and enhance the castle’s role in Broughty Ferry.

New community group is set to be launched

To support these efforts, plans are underway to establish a Friends of Broughty Ferry Castle group. Volunteers will have the opportunity to get involved, contribute ideas, and help shape the castle’s future. An appeal for volunteers will be launched in due course.

Visitors are encouraged to explore Broughty Ferry Castle during the Easter holidays, chat with the knowledgeable staff about its history, and soak in the incredible views.

While card donations will be accepted in the future, for now, cash donations are greatly appreciated to support the ongoing work.

After years of decline, this marks a turning point for Broughty Ferry Castle. With community support, patience, and a shared vision, the castle can once again become a vibrant hub for both locals and visitors.
