Box office on ice: Experiencing the Dundee Stars-Fife Flyers derby

There’s something different about a derby.

I’d been to the Dundee Ice Arena a handful of times before to watch the Dundee Stars, but I’d never experienced the atmosphere of a Tayside derby against the Fife Flyers. Everyone I’d spoken to had always described it as “box office” - and it certainly lived up to the reputation.

Joining my brother and his friend, we took our seats high in the top-right corner of the away stand, which offered an excellent view across the entire rink. From the opening face-off, there was a real buzz inside the arena, with both sets of supporters making themselves heard throughout the evening.

The Stars couldn’t have asked for a better start, taking a 2-0 lead during the opening period. The fast-paced action, physical battles and end-to-end play made it easy to see why this fixture is one of the highlights of the Scottish ice hockey calendar.

One of the evening’s standout moments came during the interval with the club’s popular “Throw a Puck” competition. Fans tossed soft pucks onto the ice, with the closest to the centre winning one of the Dundee Stars’ special Valentine’s Day jerseys worn by the players.

What made it even better was knowing the competition helped raise money for charity, adding another feel-good element to the night and showing how the club continues to support good causes alongside the action on the ice.

Although the evening eventually ended in a convincing 5-2 victory for the Stars, it was about much more than the final score. The atmosphere, passionate support and community spirit all combined to create a memorable experience.

Having finally experienced a Dundee Stars versus Fife Flyers derby for myself, I can certainly understand why so many fans describe it as one of the biggest nights in Scottish ice hockey.

It’s a fantastic evening out, whether you’re a lifelong supporter or simply looking to experience one of Dundee’s most exciting sporting occasions.
