Astronomer Royal for Scotland returning to Dundee for fascinating evening exploring the mysteries of the universe

One of Scotland’s leading astronomers is returning to Dundee this November for a fascinating evening exploring one of humanity’s biggest questions: What is reality?
Professor Catherine Heymans, the Astronomer Royal for Scotland, will visit The McManus on Tuesday 10 November 2026, where she will discuss her new book, How to Design a Universe: The Science of Real and Virtual Worlds.
The special event promises to take audiences on a remarkable journey through the mysteries of our universe, combining cutting-edge astrophysics with imagination, humour and some truly mind-bending ideas.
And for Dundee’s astronomy enthusiasts, Catherine’s return will be particularly exciting, having previously visited the city during Mills Observatory’s 90th anniversary celebrations in October 2025.
A welcome return to Dundee
Professor Catherine Heymans is one of Scotland’s most prominent astronomers and holds the prestigious title of Astronomer Royal for Scotland.
Her last visit to Dundee took place in October 2025, when she joined the celebrations marking 90 years of Mills Observatory, the UK’s first purpose-built public observatory.
The anniversary was a significant moment for the much-loved Dundee attraction, which first opened in 1935 and continues to introduce generations of visitors to the wonders of astronomy.
Now, just over a year later, Catherine is returning to Dundee for another special evening, this time at The McManus.
Exploring one of humanity’s biggest questions
At the heart of the event is Catherine’s new book, How to Design a Universe: The Science of Real and Virtual Worlds.
The book explores the science behind reality itself, inviting readers to question how the universe works and what it really means for something to be real.
Drawing on modern astrophysics, Catherine will examine ideas surrounding the nature of our universe and the possibilities of virtual worlds.
Blending scientific discoveries with wit and imagination, the evening promises to make some of the biggest questions in science engaging and accessible.
It’s a fantastic opportunity for anyone interested in astronomy, science or the mysteries of existence to hear directly from one of Scotland’s leading experts.
