A striking new piece of public art has been unveiled at Stack Retail Park, once the site of Camperdown Works—the world’s largest jute mill.

Titled The Bummer, the artwork by Jeremy Cunningham honours Dundee’s historic jute trade, with a particular focus on the “bummer whistle.” These whistles signalled the start and end of shifts in jute factories, a sound once deeply woven into the lives of Dundonians.

Adding to its significance, the text featured on the piece comes from Sheena Wellington’s song The Wimmin o’ Dundee, further rooting it in the city’s cultural identity.
