HMS Unicorn, the oldest ship in Scotland and a long-time fixture of Dundee’s waterfront, has launched a £1 million fundraising campaign to secure her future.

Built in 1824, the vessel is the fourth oldest ship in the world and still retains more than 95% of her original materials.

For decades she has been a proud reminder of Dundee’s maritime heritage, but her structure is now at risk and in urgent need of support.

The new campaign, titled Lead the Lift, was launched at Dundee’s Apex Hotel and outlines ambitious plans to elevate HMS Unicorn into a permanent cradle, stabilising her structure and ensuring she can be enjoyed for generations to come.

Beyond simply keeping her afloat, the project will redevelop the surrounding site into a maritime heritage attraction that will shine a global spotlight on both the ship and the city.

This “lift” represents the crucial next step for the Unicorn. Not only would it physically safeguard the vessel, it would also transform her into a welcoming hub for the community, complete with space for learning, exhibitions, and skills development.

Dr Andrew Tibbs, Chief Executive of the Unicorn Preservation Society, said the campaign was about far more than preservation. “Lead the Lift is about securing her survival, transforming her dockside home, and creating opportunities for education, skills, and community connection. We are inviting individuals, businesses, and partners to join us in this once-in-a-generation project.”

The Unicorn has already lived many lives – including service as a training ship for the WRNS – and the campaign seeks to honour those stories while preparing for a vibrant future.

If successful, the fundraising drive will not only save Scotland’s oldest ship but also add a new cultural asset to Dundee’s waterfront, reinforcing the city’s growing reputation as a centre for heritage, innovation, and community spirit.
