A new beer which pays homage to Dundee’s Winkie the Pigeon is launching this Friday

A brand new Dundee-brewed ale inspired by one of the city’s most remarkable wartime heroes is launching this Friday.

Winkie’s Flight, created by 71 Brewing and served at CANVAS, celebrates the extraordinary story of Winkie, a homing pigeon whose bravery helped save a stranded aircrew during the Second World War.

The bold, resinous citrus ale pays tribute to the bird who flew more than 120 miles through stormy skies and darkness after her crew’s bomber crashed into the icy North Sea.

Against all odds, Winkie made it back to her loft in Broughty Ferry, leading rescuers to the exact location of the crash and saving the lives of everyone on board.

Her incredible act of courage earned her the Dickin Medal – the animal equivalent of the Victoria Cross – which is now proudly displayed at The McManus: Dundee’s Art Gallery & Museum.

Winkie’s Flight captures that same spirit of determination and courage, blending Dundee’s brewing creativity with a story of heroism that continues to inspire generations.

The beer’s launch at CANVAS marks not only a new addition to 71 Brewing’s line-up but also a heartfelt tribute to one of the city’s most beloved wartime legends.

The brewery said the ale is “bold, resinous and bright – just like Winkie herself.”
