A Dundee play inspired by Mary Brooksbank to be shared with audiences

A new stage production exploring the life of Dundee poet, songwriter and activist Mary Brooksbank is set to be shared with the public next month in a special work-in-progress event.

Titled Oh Dear Me, the play has been written by Matthew Knights and directed by Kirstin McLean. It will be presented as a live reading at Verdant Works Museum, giving audiences an early look at the production while it is still in development.

The story centres on Brooksbank as she attempts to write her autobiography, only to feel that something is not quite right. The arrival of a stray cat sparks an unexpected journey, blending real-life inspiration with imaginative storytelling.

The reading will take place on 1 May from 7pm to 9pm in the Weavers Room at Verdant Works. Organisers describe the event as an informal sharing, designed to give audiences insight into the creative process and help shape the play’s future direction.

A discussion will follow the performance, allowing attendees to share feedback and engage directly with the creative team behind the production.

The project is being developed by Knights Theatre, with support from Creative Scotland, Dundee Heritage Trust and Leisure & Culture Dundee. A suggested donation of £5 is in place, with tickets available to book online.
