Here are 8 signs you were an Olympia kid

If you grew up in Dundee before the original Olympia Leisure Centre closed in 2013, chances are you have some very vivid memories of the place.
From the excitement of the flumes to the strong smell of chlorine that lingered in your nose all day, being an Olympia kid was a rite of passage.
Here are 8 signs you were one of them:
1. You mastered the band-swapping trick to stay in the pool longer
When staff gave you a coloured wristband to limit your pool time, you didn’t panic - you got clever. You’d swap bands with a friend or a kind stranger to dodge the lifeguard’s call. So if you had blue and knew it was almost time to go, you’d trade for red and buy yourself another full cycle of yellow, green and blue. Cheeky, but genius.
2. You always left with sweets from the vending machine
After hours of sliding, splashing and swimming, the trip wasn’t complete without a stop at the vending machines near reception. Whether it was Fruit Pastilles or a packet of Space Raiders, it was the perfect end to a day at the pool.
3. You could smell Olympia from the walkway near Tayside House
Even before stepping foot inside, the scent of chlorine hit you as soon as you crossed the bridge between Tayside House and the Olympia. It was practically a landmark scent for anyone who passed by.
4. You had swimming lessons and were jealous of the fun side
The training pool on the west side of the complex was where many of us learned to swim. But while you were perfecting your breaststroke, all you could think about was the flumes, wave machine and splash buckets calling from the main pool area.
5. Slide debates were serious business
Did you prefer the green slide with the sharp drop or the dark, twisty red one? How about yellow? Everyone had a favourite, and you defended yours like it was a matter of national pride. Simpler times, but those flume arguments were intense.
6. You zoomed through the river rapids like you were The Flash
Tucked away near the flumes, the river rapids were one of the most fun parts of Olympia. You’d hop in, let the current whip you around, and feel like a superhero as you sped through the twists and turns. Then you’d spill out into the main pool, catch your breath, and head straight back in for another go. It never got old..
7. You remember the wave machine siren like it was yesterday
Every so often, a siren would blare, and kids would rush to the pool as the wave machine started up. You’d cling to the walls or brave the deep end, pretending you were in the ocean. It was the highlight of the visit for many.
8. You still miss it, even now
Even though there’s a new Olympia, nothing quite beats the charm of the original. From its retro design to the memories made with friends and family, if you were an Olympia kid, you’ll always carry a splash of that joy with you.
