11 things that are just so Dundee

Whether you’ve lived here your whole life or you’ve just been adopted by the city, there are certain things that make Dundee, well… Dundee.

From iconic late-night pehs to the eternal seagull battle, there’s a unique charm (and chaos) that only a true Dundonian understands. If you catch yourself smiling at these, you’re definitely one of us.

  1. Going to Clark’s Bakery and getting a peh at 3am because it’s 24 hours: No night out—or night in—is complete without a trip to Clark’s for a steak peh or a chicken tikka baguette. It’s practically a rite of passage.

  2. Dodging seagulls like it’s a sport: Whether you’re on the Murraygate with a Greggs in hand or just minding your business on the High Street, the gulls here don’t play. Bonus Dundee points if you’ve ever had one swoop for your chips.

  3. Calling roundabouts “circles”: “Take the second exit at the circle” is peak Dundonian. Outsiders are confused, but we’ll never stop saying it.

  4. Having a strong opinion about which side of the Tay Bridge is better: Ask any Dundonian and they’ll back Dundee over Fife every time—and probably throw in a cheeky dig while they’re at it.

  5. Stopping to watch the Wellgate Clock - every time: It might not be the draw it once was, but something about that wee musical clock still makes folk pause mid-shop and just watch. It’s part of the Wellgate magic.

  6. Trying to cross Reform Street in a gale and questioning your life choices: That wind tunnel between the Overgate and McManus slaps differently. Umbrellas? Useless. Hair? Gone.

  7. The phrase “gain yersel’” being both motivational and mildly threatening: Said with heart, shouted at football matches, or muttered under your breath—gaun yersel’ can mean anything depending on tone.

  8. Still calling it “The Stack” - which, let’s be honest, is probably why they made it official: You can call it Stack Leisure Park all you like, but Dundonians were already calling it that for years. Feels like the new owners just gave in to the people.

  9. Getting pure nostalgic when someone mentions the Keiller’s factory or Timex: Even if you weren’t alive when they were booming, you’ve definitely heard someone talk about “how Dundee used to be.”

  10. Seeing penguins on the street and not even blinking: From the statues outside the McManus to folk in inflatable costumes during events—penguins are everywhere in Dundee, and that’s just normal now.

  11. Knowing Dens and Tannadice are literally across the street and somehow still having a football rivalry as intense as Glasgow’s: Nowhere else would you find two rival football clubs separated by a car park and still unable to agree on anything but the road name. It’s petty. It’s passionate. It’s perfect.

Whether it’s the way we speak, where we eat, or the chaos of our weather and seagulls, Dundee has its own special rhythm—and if you felt called out by even a few of these, you’re definitely tuned in. These quirks, sayings, and shared moments are what make Dundee feel like home. What would you add to the list? Let us ken
