I just asked an AI chatbot to pitch me a soap opera set in Dundee - and it didn't disappoint

After following the BAFTAs last night, and reading about someone using ChatGPT to pitch a TV show set in their home city, I decided to have a bit of fun and see what ideas it could come up with.

ChatGPT has notably been equally hilarious and accurate in its responses – and when asking the chatbot to pitch me a soap opera that was set in Dundee – it did not disappoint.

Everyone, I’d like to introduce you to “The Tay’s Edge”:

The Tay’s Edge is a compelling soap opera set in the heart of Dundee, Scotland, where the lives of its diverse residents intertwine amidst the backdrop of the city's vibrant culture and rich history. At the centre of the drama is the Sinclair family, owners of a longstanding local pub, The Tay's Edge, where secrets are spilled as freely as the pints are poured. As the Sinclair siblings, James and Fiona, struggle to keep the family business afloat amidst financial woes and fierce competition, they find themselves entangled in a web of love, betrayal, and intrigue. Meanwhile, across the city, the wealthy MacGregor clan reigns supreme, with patriarch Douglas MacGregor holding tight to his power and influence. But when his estranged daughter, Charlotte, returns to Dundee seeking redemption, old wounds are reopened, igniting a bitter rivalry that threatens to tear the city apart. Against this backdrop of familial strife and simmering tensions, the lives of Dundee's residents intersect in unexpected ways, from forbidden romances and long-buried secrets to scandalous affairs and shocking betrayals. With each episode unveiling new twists and turns, The Tay’s Edge captivates viewers with its gripping storytelling, complex characters, and the timeless drama of love, loss, and redemption in the heart of Dundee.

I was intrigued to know what ChatGPT’s ideas were for specific storylines - and they were definitely cliché as you'd expect.

One featured a storyline was entitled “Corporate Takeover” where in which Douglas MacGregor set his sights on purchasing the pub – with James and Fiona banding together to fightback against the move.

Another was “Family Secrets” where Fiona uncovers a long lost family secret which could put the family and the future of the pub at stake.

It is really captivating stuff!

Having a soap opera set in Dundee would be intriguing – and it would be funny to watch.

I just hope the Sinclair family don’t give into the MacGregor clan in selling that pub!
