Dundee's iconic Caird Hall could soon be bathed in light, as councillors prepare to approve a major lighting project aimed at enhancing the city centre.
The proposal, to be discussed on Monday, 23rd September, seeks to illuminate the landmark as part of a broader plan to improve the area and attract more visitors.
Councillors will review a report outlining the development of a lighting masterplan for Dundee's city centre. The plan is part of a strategic initiative to create a more appealing environment and support the local economy. Specialist consultants ARUP have already created concept designs focusing on the south (Shore Terrace), west (Castle Street), and east (Crichton Street) sides of Caird Hall.
A proposed sourcing strategy recommends appointing the Tayside Contracts - Street Lighting Partnership to collaborate with ARUP to finalise the lighting design. This partnership would also handle the installation, commissioning, and testing of the lighting system.
Councillor Steven Rome, Convener of Fair Work, Economic Growth and Infrastructure, highlighted the significance of the project, stating, "Our efforts to make Dundee city centre a more vibrant and attractive place are well underway, with lights already installed in Exchange Street under the City Lights City Nights initiative. This project will not only highlight Caird Hall using low-energy LED lighting but will also encourage visitors to the city centre and boost the nighttime economy."
The Caird Hall lighting project is expected to cost up to £190,000, funded by the UK Shared Prosperity Fund for 2024/2025. The committee will meet on Monday to discuss and potentially approve the project, marking another step in Dundee’s long-term vision for city centre improvements.
The project follows a series of successful city centre enhancements, including the commercial waste project, shopfront improvements, and upgrades to New Inn Entry.
